Our country is in deep trouble and our politicians are making things worse. It's time for bold new leadership to fix America.

Feb 1 - Click to Support Me at Americans Elect!

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with my blog, but I've been busy with some interviews, including http://target2025.com/on-the-radio-with-laurence-j-kotlikoff/, and interacting with Americans Elect.

Day 14

Interesting to see Mr. Gingrich win the S. Carolina primary. If he goes on to win the Republican primary, we'll have two candidates who will be viewed, correctly or not, as at complete opposite ends of the political, philosophical, and policy spectrums. That will make an independent candidate that much more appealing to the majority of voters.

Day 13

Spent day organizing a fund raiser at my apartment in Brookline, MA and some radio interviews. Had an interesting experience in interacting with an old friend, who is a superb economist. I asked him, via email, to look at www.thepurpleplans.org and give me feedback. Five minutes later I received an email saying he couldn't support my candidacy because we needed to fix healthcare by doing W, X, Y, and Z. I responded by saying, I agree fully that we need to do W, X, Y, and Z and my plan does precisely W, X, Y, and Z and here's how.

Day 12

Had an interesting radio interview with Peter Schiff, a right-of-center radio talk-show host. Peter's a very quick and insightful person, but like so many people on the left and the right, pigeon-holing comes far too naturally. That makes cogent discussion pretty tough. Peter started off introducing me as a former advisor to President Reagan.

Day 11

Spent time today emailing reporters. Quite interesting to learn that Governor Romney, one of our nation's wealthiest people, is paying only an estimated (by him) 15 percent tax of his income in taxes. In fact, the Governor's estimate may be far too high. If the Governor earned substantial capital gains on his very substantial wealth, but did not realize the gains (i.e., did not sell the appreciated assets), his income should properly be recorded as including such unrealized capital gains.

Why Kotlikoff in 2012?

Our country's problems are severe and getting worse. No candidate has all the answers. But the problems we face are primarily economic ones and may be better addressed by someone who has spent his life focused on our economic problems and their solutions. No economist has, to my knowledge, ever run for President. In recent years, we've had a nuclear engineer, an actor, two businessmen, and two lawyers. In their hands, the economy has done very poorly on a number of critical dimensions. In particular, none has come to grips with the country's long-term fiscal insolvency.

We've also been very badly served by the two parties' primary concern -- obtaining and maintaining power. This may work for them, but it's certainly not working for us. It's time to elect someone with fresh, bold ideas that will appeal to all segments of society -- someone with the courage to both articulate and implement what's really needed to fix America.
